Depression and the Case for Mental Discipline

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

People who live in the past are depressed and people who live in the future (like Rapture buffs) are angry and frustrated; I have friends like this. The Bible says live in the present taking orders from the Lord. I’ve had bouts of depression and I believe all people do because we cannot turn our minds off.  The weight of the world is not your business; you can’t fix everything.  Sometimes you can’t fix anything. Speculation goes no where, keeping you busy and unproductive. The answer to depression (or any other question) in this blog is always from one standpoint – what does God think?

Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Man is made up of 3 parts – spirit, soul and body.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Notice the order of the words.
The spirit is intended to control the soul (think, feel, decide) and the soul is to control the body. The spirit is from God and is NOT the soul, a frequent error in dictionaries. If this pattern is observed the patient (person) is of sound mind.

Your brain is a muscle you can control

When either the body or the soul takes over there is an imbalance, hence the church steps in and says that salvation is the way. Because the heavenly truth is not visible, many people miss it for a long time, but it is always there. I am not preaching here, just the facts, ma’m.
The excessive hopelessness (soul part) leads to suicide. The answer for you is to control your mind.

Control your Mind

This is not a Pollyanna thing. It is a direct effort on your part to decide, deliberately and purposefully to think on something else. You can kill yourself with “what ifs” over rejection, and failure, and other useless speculation. People who have fought this mental battle turn on classical music (even if they don’t particularly like it) or read something on a totally different subject, or play a challenging game (not simple checkers) or exercise. My cure is Bible reading; the modern versions are easy and fun to read.

Negative thoughts are easy

Every unsolvable problem, and you cannot prevent the suicide of another person, becomes larger the more it is unwisely contemplated. Prayer helps, but nothing is sure fire because each person makes his/her own way in life.
Uneducated people try to solve their mental issues with drink, parties, sex, even crime. I worked with inmates for many years and they sought excitement to deal with their sense of failure and worthlessness. Educated people should have mental discipline but when it comes to emotional collapse they do what everyone else does.

Being positive takes effort

Multiple marriages or affairs is a favorite of men. Women will over work or pressure others emotionally. If you are a sufferer of depression, work out your own salvation with mental discipline. Continued use of substitutes, like drugs, leads no where.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
