Dream Symbols – Water, Rocks, Pearls

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The things of the natural world are a reflection of spiritual truth. So if you want to know truths about God or life, look to the natural world for evidence.

The Bible is full of symbols

In the sometimes strange world of Biblical symbolism, things are upside down. The mineral world is superior to the vegetable and that is superior to the animal kingdom.  The lamb (Jesus) is sacrificed for the sins of the world, and those who join Him in heaven become stars in his crown.  Stars sing, which means they are personalities.  Living matter is brief whether man or elephant but diamonds are forever as the local jeweler advertises.

Diamonds

Diamonds are a symbol of suffering because they are formed under intense heat and pressure. The suffering is also hidden from public view.  Diamonds are very hard to locate and to extract from their mountains of dirt.

Dirt

Dirt represents natural man.  It is not to be confused with “being dirty” unless the dream specifically says so.  Earthiness is not evil in itself.  It is just not a spiritual substance.  However, a dream in which you see the need for a bath means just that- you need to find out what you have been involved with what has left you soiled.

Keep in mind that dreams are about truth, and need to be looked into in that light.  We are supposed to take baths regularly, but if we have been in the wrong place with the wrong people, a dream might indicate to get rid of that association and clean up your act.  Taking too many baths is also not a good sign.  In Shakespeare’s  play Lady Macbeth repeatedly washed her hands.  Her guilt was what she was trying to wash away.

Pearls

Pearls which are a symbol of suffering can be very expensive. The suffering image comes from the fact that an irritant enters the clam’s shell and the nacre forms around the sand.  As the oyster “suffers” (i.e. endures) the pearl forms.  The pearly gates of heaven allow those who also have suffered for others to enter.

Revelation 21:21 the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.

Rocks

The animal kingdom however is temporary and temporal.  That kingdom dies and goes away.  The mineral kingdom is glorified.  Jesus is referred to as the rock.  Rocks are places of stability and permanence.  Often we find Jesus referred to as “The Rock.”  This is repeated by contemporary churches, i.e. The Rock Church.  Rocks are foundational material. In describing the experience of the Old Testament people, Paul uses three symbols here – water surrounding them as a “cloud” in the desert, and drinking from a rock, which is Christ Himself. Most of us do not go looking for water in rocks.

1 Corinthians 10:1-5 The Message (MSG)

10 1-5 Remember our history, friends, and be warned. All our ancestors were led by the providential Cloud and taken miraculously through the Sea. They went through the waters, in a baptism like ours, as Moses led them from enslaving death to salvation life. They all ate and drank identical food and drink, meals provided daily by God. They drank from the Rock, God’s fountain for them that stayed with them wherever they were. And the Rock was Christ.

Water

This passage shows that water which is call the “word of God” surrounded the chosen people wherever they went. This is true for us as well. Water is always a reference to the word of God which is Jesus Himself.

Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

Jesus as water is present at the creation. Jesus is also referred to as the Word

Genesis 1 King James Version (KJV)1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Water baptism is symbolic of the person being born into the kingdom of God by being washed by the water of the word of God and also being saved by the blood of Jesus. Natural birth includes both a lot of blood and water when the birth sac is broken.  We can live a long time without food but not water.

Iron and Brass

Iron is the symbol of judgment. Chains are made of iron. Brass is also judgment and specifically refers to the problem of having one’s prayers ignored.

Deuteronomy 28:23 The heavens which are over your head will be bronze, and the earth that is under you will be iron.

This passage and most of Deuteronomy 28 is a group of curses on those who disobey the laws of God.

Precious Stones

Gems and precious stones have specific meanings as well usually reflected in their color.  (See the post on colors.) Many dreams are not in color but when they are, pay attention to what you see. I once had a dream about blue and white stripes.  The painter’s name was Tammy, which means purity, and white stands for holiness and blue for faith.  That was my message, to paint my life in those colors. Tamar in the Bible is the name of the date Palm tree, a symbol of praise. What made the dream memorable was also the fact that blue is my favorite color.

The purpose of these posts on dream interpretation is not to interpret your dreams, but to have you do them. God is, after all, talking to you not me.
