Today Jews celebrate the Feast of Purim. A wicked politician leader named Haman devised a scheme to trap and destroy a group of people who refused to worship him. He built a gallows on which to hang one of these enemies and then set his trap. Or so he thought. Through a twist of fate – it’s a “God Thing” – Haman himself ended up on the gallows, a hanging which we celebrate today.
A group of men in Washington DC set up a scheme to destroy President Donald J. Trump. It was the Russian Hoax. We await in this country a new gallows because this plot against our president was also exposed.
The same thing happened here in North Carolina this past month. Here is the story.
Of all the lessons I learned recently, the idea that I should walk away from a fight with evil was a surprise. God called His people to be Change Agents, not to allow evil to rule.
The incident involved an acquaintance that I worked with on political campaigns for the better part of ten years. She was running for a national office and a group of people who have s long history of being involved in dirty dealings took an audio tape, doctored it and falsified it to the point she was saying something absolutely untrue.
They maketh and loveth a lie
Revelation 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
This group put the fraudulent tape on YouTube and distributed to many voters in the district, an area the same size as Rhode Island. Although it is sparsely populated meeting candidates personally is difficult even for the best financed ones. Many people would see this con and believe because they didn’t know the back story.
I no longer live there but of course was incensed that this carefully planned and executed trick should be going on. Furthermore I knew they had done this kind of double dealing now six times for the past 15 years. It is hard to identify their motive – but it seems that first they don’t like women and second they like to be nasty, just for the sake of being nasty.
For 10 days I engaged them on social media, all over Facebook but also I alerted friends all over my state of North Carolina and elsewhere, because I knew they knew voters in that area. Several other people were tracking down where the money came for this and some damning flyers, involving not just this woman but another male candidate. I was called names, told to get off Facebook, and in spite of the first person testimony the ugliness continued. Literally hundreds of people were taking sides.
Finally God told me to stop defending the truth and cease speaking. But why?
God said to stop defending the truth
The reason shocked me. He said that as long as I engaged them in the controversy, and the more they defended their wickedness, the greater the sin and punishment on them in the future.
He reminded me of what they had done wrong. Besides the obvious creation of a lie out of whole cloth and then finding hundreds of dollars to finance flyers and other actions, they had cursed a Christian.
Genesis 12: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
God defends his people. You do not need to be some stellar believer with your name on a church, a traveling evangelist, or an ordained minister, God is still not going to overlook evil behavior against his sons and daughters. That scripture was spoken to Abraham, the father of the faithful, but it includes us on down the line here as Christians many thousands of years as well. God’s word does not drain away with time. He is loyal to his word – regardless. We are also of the family of God.
Then he reminded me of this. This group of people were always cursed. They had been to court with foolish litigation against believers, in fact for all those years all of the victims of this crowd were believers.
Proverbs 3:33 The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.
Over a period of a decade and a half God had already disciplined them, and He had already blessed and defended the victims. More importantly, if I continued, they would continue to receive more and more judgment for their sins. He was asking me to stop in order to reduce their final sentence. I scratched my head.
This is called mercy
God is so generous and loving that even when He sees you are headed to hell, He puts on the brakes. I will gain nothing by continuing to battle with them. They have chosen a path of deliberate ignorance. What benefit could I get? And I was already exhausted by the nastiness. I told one observer I felt like I had been sprayed with liquid feces.
1 Corinthians 14:38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
Thank you God that your mercies are new every morning. You continue to surprise me, Lord.
