Mama says, “You’d better get up and get to school on time because I ain’t supporting you when you’re eighteen.” That’s white privilege.
Daddy says, “You can bum around Europe if you want to but when you get back I’ll be supporting your sister in college so you better plan on paying for college yourself.” That’s white privilege.
Grandpa, who can usually be hit for a touch, says, “That Mustang you bought won’t fill itself with gas, and your $6,000 a year insurance bill you get to pay, so where is your job?” That’s white privilege.
Your sister says, “Don’t you drag any of those deadbeat friends of yours home for me to date. I want someone with a future.” That’s white privilege.
Your neighbor calls, “Miz Smyth, the family of five down the street just lost their daddy. Can you provide dinner for them on Friday and Saturday night? The other neighbors have signed up for the rest of the week.” That’s white privilege.
Gramma says, “I love you Johnny, but if you get caught drunk driving it will stick on your record like glue forever, affect any future employment, and cost you in increased insurance. Also, I can’t afford bail money.” That’s white privilege.
You see a poor person struggling to pay for his groceries. He’s about $6 short. You offer to pay. That’s black privilege.
You find a paycheck from Belk’s to employee Miss Dolores Jones. It has her home address. You drive the check to her house. A little boy answers the door. She thanks you and starts crying. That’s black privilege.
You decide since you have a decent job you should pay back to your community and you offer to be a Big Brother or Big Sister. You take your kid to PuttPutt and you let him win a few times. That’s black privilege.
Perhaps now you’ve noticed that white privilege and black privilege are the very same thing. It is responsibility for oneself, and also increasing responsibility for the good of others as you become more responsible for yourself.
