Who is "The Man of Sin"?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

This man of sin is thought to be an individual who will embody evil in himself. The prophecy is based on 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 where someone, presumably the Holy Spirit, has held this “man” back from public view and is now exposing him. We will know that Jesus is returning when we see this person exposed. This man of sin, lawlessness will take over the temple of God.

Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness[a] is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.

But – the man of lawlessness is not a single person

This “Man of sin” is actually the sin nature in us. We all have it. It comes with the territory by being born human. Adam and Eve had an original sin nature, which is why we call it original sin. It is like saying that apples do not have seeds. You can’t find a real apple without seeds inside. They are there – originally.

The Temple of God is You

The “temple” is you.  “Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

“For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Cor. 6:19-20).

Secular and history religions have temples; Christianity recognizes each individual life is the “temple of God.” How you use it is your business. The Man of sin takes over your physical body and your mind and controls who you are.

Original Sin is part of our spiritual DNA

So it is with original sin. God built the propensity to sin inside us. Our lives are a reflection of how we react to sin as individuals. Our earthly job is to accept the holy promises of God to change our inner man and become attached to His Kingdom through belief in His Son. Think of this life as a test to see how well we handle the problem of sin in our lives. God has given us a solution, a personal one, for us to follow. He did not change the way we were made; He made us so we could make our changes through Him.

That is the simply gospel message and it applies to all humans no matter where they were born or their race or condition. Life is not about being good enough to be accepted by God as so many seem to believe.

Adam and Eve did not know they had this nature. It was exposed to them after they disobeyed. At no time did God ever tell them what sin was or how it worked. He simply said they were to obey one, single command – do not eat the fruit of that specific tree. You, as a child, had no knowledge of sin as well.

Adam and Eve had no knowledge of sin

There were other trees but God never mentioned them. Adam and Eve were shocked when they found themselves naked – what had happened? Their disobedience exposed their sin to them for the first time. And so it is for every believer who comes to an understanding about himself -that he is powerless to save himself because his inner nature can corrupt him.

So it is with this “man of sin.” At the End Time before Jesus returns, this evil nature in humans will become naked in public. That “evil” nature will be proud of its sinfulness, and show it off. It will expect acceptance for its sinfulness, even applause.

According to Thessalonians someone that has been holding this evil back will start exposing it. That person is identified as The Holy Spirit. God has kept this evil nature hidden in our hearts but now we get to see it worldwide.

Human kind is now in the valley of decision. Which way will we go? Every man and woman must make up his or her mind. In addition Christians will now be exposed too. The future is now.
