Worry is the opposite of prayer. Prayer is turning over to God things He can deal with, things in fact He should deal with. In this case Kelly is worried about her mother dying? Who handles death – God or Kelly?
Kelly can’t control life and death issues. And she can have little control over health issues for another person as well. As a matter of fact, most worry involves something we cannot control. Like worry about Iraq, or the stock market, or, in Florida, about another hurricane. Worry is always wasted mental activity.
Prayer is not easy because it requires us to learn how to turn over all the issues to God. Most of us secretly think we could do a better job of running things than He can. Since we can’t act, we worry instead. Worry is INACTION – but prayer is ACTION. We do what we can – prepare – and let God handle the rest.
I am going to include a group of scriptures about giving God the authority over issues. Maybe that will help her get her eyes off her inability to control and on to God’s ability – and desire – to control. And it gives Kelly something concrete to act upon.
