All went well at first, then the leader took me aside and said I was no longer welcome; I was a false prophet, he said, and he was in charge. God\u2019s word to us is always to leave when we are not of one mind so I backed off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was clear to me this man had even at age 68 a call to be a pastor. God has no retirement age. But this \u201ccall\u201d was really arrogance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To arrogate means to take upon oneself authority you do not have.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God\u2019s call is grace, but authority is earned. When the Scripture says many are called but few are chosen it means that God cannot choose everyone he calls because the chosen ones are those who prepare themselves for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be Prepared<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first warning any person must heed, is to know that you must not go into the ministry too early if you have not prepared yourself. Paul spent 14 years on the back side of the desert studying what God had for him. I went on a bus through the desert in Israel and it was pretty unpleasant. Then Paul returned to Jesus\u2019 disciples and asked them to review his ideas and theology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A young person may have a call to be a doctor but he\u2019ll not be removing anyone\u2019s tonsils until the medical board says so. This is true of God\u2019s work too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>After 52 years of ministry, I\u2019ve not seen it all but I\u2019ve seen enough working for the Church and the Kingdom, both at home and in foreign fields.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you need to prepare for ministry?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Know the rulebook. The Bible is both law and grace, wisdom and prophecy. The Old Testament history provides examples and patterns for everything from marriage to church management. Too many ministers have not read the Bible through even once.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Personal Righteousness. You won\u2019t always be right. You are a &#8220;work in progress&#8221; but you can always seek to have a daily conversation with God asking him \u201cam I sticking to your plan for my life?\u201d What needs to be cleaned up?<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Flexibility. The manual of church practice may not apply to your circumstances. Find out God\u2019s plan for that church, that place, that time.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example of Smart Church Planting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When I lived in Tennessee a new congregation found an old church building in a poor area of town. In the beginning there was mediocre attendance. Then they set upon a plan that was wildly successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They sent a bus around on Sunday morning to the low-income housing asking parents, \u201cCan we take your kids to Sunday school?\u201d The parents signed legal release forms and the kids were excited to get a meal. Then they took them back to the church for breakfast and Bible study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That Sunday morning, they learned that all the family\u2019s money was gone in drinking over the weekend and the kids were hungry. They were often dirty and poorly clothed. Eventually the church provided voluntary showers and chose new clothes for the kids. They packed little suppers for them to take home to last until Monday when they\u2019d have school food. They even included extra food for very small siblings as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parents will follow children to church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually the parents started drifting in to see what their kids were so excited about. Remember this. <em>Even the worst parents appreciate someone who is kind to their children.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over two years the congregation ballooned to 600 members, mostly the parents who now decided to straighten out their lives. In no way does this match the norm of faith and practice but it got God\u2019s job done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Another warning &#8211; Expect a crisis of faith<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>No one skips this step. Yes, we can pretend it never happened. Sometimes it hits the newspapers and everything comes undone. It can be a personal crisis, a dreaded disease, divorce, a falling away of family, crime, persecution for no reason at all, political upheaval &#8211; even war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may not be called to resist Adolf Hitler as did Eric Bonhoeffer who destroyed both Germany and his life. Bonhoeffer is the book of Job writ large. God is saying, there is another level of faith and Christian witness you are invited to join. Many men and women stop here and not move on.&nbsp; It is your choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be humbled, exposed, driven away, slandered. You may lose all your friends or called to endure by standing your ground. How you react will determine the rest of your life. Out of that struggle you become a key person. You moved from servant to friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You moved from a life in God to dead in Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I notice that retired ministers will often devote the balance of their lives to the word of God and prayer. No, they are not retired at all. They moved up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A false call to ministry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now back to the man who called me a false prophet. What followed was two long years of his fumbling along with no message. His small group dwindled down to six. He didn\u2019t seem to notice the loss since he had independent income and the applause from this group seem to keep him encouraged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%206%3A26&amp;version=KJV\">Luke 6:26<\/a> Woe unto&nbsp;you, when all men shall&nbsp;speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.<\/em> A little persecution tells others you have a message the devil does not want out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then another year went by. The group hung on. I asked an observer what they did. The reply, \u201cHe serves snacks.\u201d &nbsp;Do you want to be known as someone who serves snacks?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was condescending, patronizing, clueless and also ineffective. How long will he stay that way? As long as he wants to. As long as God tolerates it.
